I know that you think you Mac can't get a virus but that just isn't true. What Apple has said is that it can't get a PC virus which is correct but there are still bugs out there specificly for the Mac. Just last year a single trojan virus infected over 60,000 Macs.
Just turning on a wireless router isn't enough. You need to secure your network. Why? There are a couple of reasons. First is just that a neighbor can accidentally connect to your network making your internet slower for you. That isn't too bad but the problem that is becoming more frequent is people driving through neighborhoods looking for open networks. If they are sophisticated enough they can observe and copy accounts and passwords. The other thing they can do is use your internet to do illegal activity. Then, when someone investigates they find you. Please make sure you set your wireless router to the strongest encryption and choose a good key.
Wireless networking is great for many things but it isn't for everything. For example many databases that may be shared don't like wireless. While wireless networking is always improving the speed still isn't as fast as wired. That being said sometimes the problem may also be a weak wireless network. Call us and we have tools to make your wireless stronger and go farther. If you have determined that you need a wired network we can do that as well.
When you call someone for computer repair, internet fixes or software problems ususaly the first thing we ask is for you to reboot the computer or restart the modem or router. Why? There are a number of reasons. On your computer: When you start a program lots of things go into your thinking memory. When you close the program, in theory, that all goes away. In reality it doesn't. So, over time, as you start and close programs things can get stuck in your thinking memory that can only be cleared by restarting.
On other items like your internet, printers or routers; These are electronic components that can get circuits stuck in a certain state that can only be reset by turning off the power. So, before you call anyone out to for computer repair, Printer repair or fixing your internet please restart everything. It can save you time and a service call. There is always lots of talk about being careful with emails and websites but not enough about the most important thing you can do to avoid a virus. Keep things up to date. You get lots of popups near your clock about things having new updates. Please do them. The most important are: Windows, your antivirus, Java and Flash. Having out of date versions of any of these are just inviting a virus. If you have something about which you are unsure you can always drop me an email or call me. For no charge I will tell you if you should do it.
