To Update or not to update

9/26/2013

That is the question.  The answer depends on where the offer comes.  To keep your computer safe you need to, at least, update; Windows, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Flash player and Java.  All of these updates are free and are meant to improve security.

Unfortunately the difficulty lies in companies trying to convince you that they are the legitimate updates and, if you click on the wrong thing, it could install a virus.

If you are on a website and something pops up asking you to update, that is, almost always, unsafe.  If you see an icon by your clock that wants to run an update it is usually the legitimate one.

If you are unsure and you want to update manually you can go to the appropriate sites.  If you use your search to find the sites be very careful as malicious companies will try to get you to go to them.

To update Adobe Reader or Adobe Flash go to
www.adobe.com To update Windows go to the Windows update in your programs.  To update Java go to www.java.com

Notebook Wireless not working?

9/24/2013

This problem is a lot more common than you may think.  All modern notebook computers have a place where you can disable your wireless.  Sometimes it is a small switch on the edge of the computer.  Sometimes it is a push button by the power button.  Other times it is a button on one of the function keys (f1, f2...)  If you don't know that it exists it is easy to accidentally shut it off.  If your computer can't find any wireless networks and you know there is one near by look for the switch.  If you can't find it give us a call.

Steps to speed up your computer

Not ready to bring your machine in but could use a bit of speeding up?  Here are a few things to look at

1)    Ram - the thinking memory.  If you have XP 1 Gig is enough.  If you have Vista or 7 you want, at least 2 gigs and 4 would be better.  Windows 8 I would recommend 4 to 8 gigs

2)    Look at what automatically runs when the computer starts.  Lots of times there are programs that you didn't even remember putting on the machine.  Others are programs you use on occasion but have no need to start every time Windows does.  In the start menu type msconfig.  It will have a tab called "start up" you can then go an uncheck whatever you don't need regularly.

3)    Unused programs.  Go into control panel and remove anything that you don't use.

4)    Speed up the internet by going into internet options and clearing out cookies and history.

This list isn't a magic bullet but should perk things up a bit.

While I can't guarantee that we are the cheapest I know that we are extremely fair in fixing your laptop.  Yesterday we did a laptop screen replacement and, with everything, we were $50 cheaper than another place quoted for just the screen.
